The New Hangman
“The New Hangman” is a short play that shows how people sometimes judge others without understanding the full truth.
The story takes place in a small town. The old hangman (the person who hangs criminals) has retired. Now the town needs a new hangman. A stranger comes to the town looking for work. The people think he looks strong and serious, so they believe he must be the new hangman sent by the government.
The stranger tries to say that he is not the hangman, but the people do not listen. They are scared of him because they think hangmen are cruel and dangerous. Even the magistrate (judge) and other officials treat him with respect mixed with fear. Finally, they force the job on him even though he never wanted it.
At the end, the real government message arrives. It says that the town does not need a new hangman because the death penalty has been stopped. When the people learn this, they realize their big mistake. They made an innocent man into something he never was, only because of their own assumptions and fear.
The stranger leaves the town quietly, showing how wrong judgments can hurt a person.
Kind Bishop
The story is about a kind Bishop who is always ready to help the poor. He lives with his sister Persome. Persome thinks he is too kind and people take advantage of him.
One night, a criminal (convict) who escaped from prison enters the Bishop’s house. He is hungry, tired, and dangerous. He threatens the Bishop with a knife and asks for food and rest. Instead of being scared, the Bishop treats him with great kindness. He gives him food, a bed, and treats him like a guest. The Bishop owns only one valuable thing—a pair of silver candlesticks. They were a gift from his dying mother and he loves them very much. During the night, the convict steals the candlesticks and runs away. Later, the police catch him and bring him back to the Bishop’s house with the candlesticks. They expect the Bishop to say that the man is a thief. But the Bishop does the opposite! He tells the police that he gave the candlesticks to the convict as a gift. The police release the convict. The convict is shocked. No one has ever shown him such love and forgiveness. The Bishop gently tells him to use the candlesticks to start a new, honest life. The criminal cries and promises to change.The play Day of Atonement
The play Day of Atonement by Margaret Wood describes the themes of redemption and forgiveness as its central motif. The play centres around the background of the Nazi holocaust. The play unveils the life and experiences of the Jacob’s family and their association with the German doctor Dr Krauss. Jacob, along with his wife Marthe and their children Otto and Isle are Jewish victims of Nazi oppression. Even after twelve years of their terrorizing history they still live in Germany.
During their life in Germany they get acquainted with a German doctor named Dr Krauss. He is a surgeon who is bent on serving the helpless Jews. He operated Isle who suffered from tuberculosis. Jacob and Marthe was thankful to the doctor for saving the life of their daughter. But Otto had an aversion towards the doctor. He reveals that Krauss was a doctor who served in the Nazi concentration camps. But for the past twelve years he was trying to make amends for his past crimes by extending his services to the Jewish people.
One night when Krauss visits the Jacob’s family, Otto in a fit of anger discloses all about the past of Krauss’ life to Jacob and Marthe. The doctor used to conduct ‘surgery on the healthy’, ‘mutilate the strong’ and try experiments to see how much the pain the body can withstand before dying. But in spite of knowing about all this cruelty Jacob and Marthe wholeheartedly forgives the doctor. Even though Otto decides to kill the doctor for all his wrongdoings, his parents vehemently oppose him from doing such an act.
The doctor was influenced by a holocaust victim named Carl Baecke, a Jew of the Theresienstadt camp. The doctor tells Jacob and Marthe that he is ready to surrender before the court. But Jacob requests the doctor to escape from the house. Towards the end of the story the doctor quite willingly steps out of the house where he is caught and shot by the jews.
The Dear Departed

“The Dear Departed” is a comic one-act play that shows the selfishness and greed of family members when they think an old relative has died.
The story is about Abel Merryweather, an old man. His two daughters, Amelia and Elizabeth, do not really care for him. They only come to his house because they heard that he is dead. Instead of feeling sad, they start talking about his property, his money, and who will get what.
Amelia and her husband Henry start taking Abel’s things even before the funeral. Amelia takes Abel’s clock and bureau, saying she deserves them.
When Elizabeth and her husband Ben arrive, the sisters start arguing about who loved their father more, but actually both want his belongings.
Suddenly, Abel Merryweather comes walking into the room — alive! He was not dead at all. Everyone is shocked and embarrassed.
Abel sees the greedy nature of his daughters. He decides to change his will. He says he will leave all his property to whoever lives with him and takes care of him. Both daughters immediately start pretending to love him and want to take him home.
In the end, Abel says he will go to the pub and enjoy his life, showing he is wiser and funnier than his selfish daughters.
